Pupina aureola Stoliczka, 1872
“This species is closely allied to P. aurea, Hinds, differing from it by a smaller aperture, a more laterally producted, shorter and slightly contracted last whorl. The solidity of the shell and the intensity of coloration naturally varies with age; young specimens are thin, and nearly transparent, pale straw-coloured, the suture is distinctly impressed and the outer lip very slightly producted. In adolescent specimens the upper labial rib is rather distant from the posterior angle of the mouth as in the Tenaserim P. arula, but the Penang shell is shorter and stouter. Old specimens are entirely covered with a polished glazem and are intensely or yellowish rufous brown, with a yellow inner and outer peristome.” (Stoliczka, 1872)
“I received from the late Mr. tt. Damon some specimens of a Perak Pupina under the name of P. lahatensis, de Morgan, apparently collected by that gentleman. The name was probably abandoned by the author, as it does not appear in his paper. One of these examples corresponds exactly with the figure of P. aureola, Stol., the others with P. lowi, de Morgan.”
(Kobelt, 1902)
Stoliczka (1872) original descriptions on Pupina aureola – “P. testa oblique ovate, apice breviter sub-acuta, glaberrima, politissima, moderate solida, intense vel luteole succinea, prope peristoma aurea; anfractibus sex, convexiusxulis in adultis sutura indistinct junctis, primis duobus sub-mammillatis, ultimo spira breviore, valde descendente; aperture parva, circulari, labio incrassato, sulco satis profundo ab anf. Penultimo separato; incisionibus angustis sed profundis; labor antice semsim producto extus paulum incrassato, aureo tincto. Operculum orbiculare, altum, corneum ad utrumque latus paulo concavum, ex lamella sprialiter torta tenuissima compositum, nucleo depresse circulari, paullulum incrassato instructum.”
“The animal is of the usual Cyclophorid type, uniform, intense or grayish black, paler along the sides of the foot, which is of about the same length as that of the shell.” (Stoliczka, 1872)
Pupina aureola – “Long. testae 8.8, lat. ad medium 5, diam. Apert. ext. 2.3 mm.” (Stoliczka, 1872); Pupina (Tylotoechus) aureola – “H. 8.8, Durchm. 5, Mündungsweite 2.3 mm.” (Kobelt, 1902)
Type locality – “Penang” (Stoliczka, 1872)
Other localities – “mont Tchôra, près d'Ipoh (Kinta)” (Morgan, 1885); “Malay Peninsula; Jalor” (Laidlaw, 1928); “Limestone hill near Kampong Tebing Tinggi, North of Kangar, Perlis” (Benthem-Jutting, 1960)
