Sinoennea subcylindrica (von Moellendorff, 1891)
“The smaller (2.75 x 1.1 mm) corresponded very well with Mollendorff’s description, figure, and dimensions until the dirt with which the aperture was completely filled was cleared away. It can now be seen that the shell has armature very like that of butleri; it generally resembles that species except for its very much smaller size. If this shell is not Mollendorff’s holotype it still remains to rediscover specimens with no columellar lamina and no palatal folds, to bear the name of subcylindrica. The larger specimen (3.3 x 1.5 mm) has every appearance of an immature shell with peristome and armature incompletely developed. There is a trace of a columellar lamina and one palatal fold corresponding to the deeper-seated fold in butleri, and there is a certain superficial resemblance to that species. It is however, a more cylindrical shell than butleri and differs somewhat in sculpture, having fewer and stouter costae on the third whorl. The remaining whorls have costae like those of butleri, but rather more widely spaced. It appears to be a new species which cannot be described until a suitable series of shells becomes available.” (Peile, 1929)
“The occurrence of S. subcylindrica at Cherrapunji, Khasi Hills, Assam (Peile, 1929, p. 270) seems rather doubtful and has to be confirmed by new material. I have not seen the shells from Cherrapunji.” (Benthem-Jutting, 1961)
Möllendorff (1891) original descriptions on Sinoennea subcylindracea – “T. anguste perforata, fere cylindracea, albido-hyalina; spira superne conoideo-convexa, apice obtuso, turn cylindracea. Anfr. 7, convexiusculi, costulis verticalibus subdistantibus-36 in anfractu penultimo-regulariter sculpti, ultimus angustior, basi subcompressus, paullum ascendens. Apertura verticalis, rotundato-tetragona; peristoma latiuscule expansum, albo-callosum, superne continuum, subsolutum, sinuatum, margo dexter ad insertionem subito attenuatus. Lamella parietalis valida, longe intrans.”
Tomlin (1938) original descriptions on Sinoennea siputana – “Shell regularly cylindeical, hyaline whitish, plainly and deeply perforate; whorls seven, convex with deep sutures, apex flattened and obtuse; photoconch of two whorls smooth; from the third whorl down sculptured with equally spaced, rather close axial costulations of which there are about 34 on the penultimate whorl; aperture oblong, vertical, tilted considerably to the left-hand, subangular at the upper corners, rounded off below, with a broadly dilated peristome, furnished with four dental processes, whereof one oblong tooth is very deeply inset on the columella, while two blunt, rounded, mound-shaped ones are on the outer lip – the upper and smaller one on a level with the lower extremity of the parietal and fixed on the edge of the peristome, the lower an larger being inserted a little more within.”
Benthem-Jutting (1961) descriptions on Sinoennea subcylindracea – “Shell cylindrical, with blunt top and little attenuated base. Glassy white, transparent, with numerous equally spaced ribs, 29-32 on the last whorl, the holotype in Senckenberg Museum Frankurt (no. 111493) has 29 ribs. No spiral striation. Whorls 6-6 ½, the two top whorls smooth and rounded, the lower ones ribbed and somewhat flattened. Base rounded. Suture well impressed. Umbilicus narrow. Aperture almost vertical, the lower part somewhat receding. Quadrangular with rounded angles. In the parieto-angular corner with a strong fold, stretching interiorly as a high, undulating ridge. Columellar lamella deeply seated. The corresponding area on the exterior of the shell bears a small pit in the umbilical region. On the palatal side with two teeth, the lower one deeper than the upper one. The lower one correspond with a pit on the exterior of the whorl behind the peristome. Between this pit and the peristome the distal part of the last whorl is somewhat swollen. Peristome continuous, thickened and reflected, adnate to the penultimate whorl, The long axis of the peristome makes an oblique angle with that of the shell.”
Sinoennea siputana – “Long., 3 mm.; diam. max., 1.5 mm.” (Tomlin, 1938); Sinoennea subcylindracea – “Dimensions: Height 2.8-3.1 mm; Width 1.2-1.3 mm; Height of aperture 0.9-1.0 mm.” (Benthem-Jutting, 1961)
Shell height – 2.75 mm; Shell width – 1 mm.
