Crossopoma albersi (Pfeiffer, 1847)
(Morgan, 1885)
“I have tried to give a literal translation of de Morgan’s description, which certainly lacks the technical precision of a diagnosis, but at least permits me to recognise his species in an immature example from Larut. It is decidedly not a Cyclophorus; I considered the Larut specimen to be a Pterocyclus which might, on account of the curious canaliculated suture, be related to Pterocyclus albersi, Pfr. De Morgan’s mention of a tube and description of the operculum point to Spiraculum; I should also have thought of Rhiostoma, but there is no mention of the last whorl being solute. Whether the species is really new or has to be combined with a Bornean or Siamese form I cannot now decide.” (Möllendorff, 1886)
“De Morgan's mention of a tube behind the aperture is misleading and made me suppose that the species belonged to Spiraculum. It is not a proper tube, but only an enlarged "wing" typical of Pterocyclus. The species is very much like P. albersi, Pet.”
(Martens, 1902)
Pfeiffer (1847) original descriptions on Pterocyclos albersi – “T. latissime umbilicata, discoidea, solidula, striatula, sub epidermide cornea alba, castaneo marmorata et fascia lata nigricante infra medium circumdata; spira medio vix elevata; anfr. 5 planiusculi, sutura profunda, canaliculata discreti, ultimus antice solutus, superne squamoso-carinatus; apertura subcircularis, intus albida; perist. duplex, internum rectum, prominulum, expansiusculum, superne profunde incisum, externum subincrassatum, patens, superne in rostrum antrorsum incurvatum, liberum, postice in carinam abiens protractum. Operculum extus convexum, spiraliter lamellatum: lamellis inferis spinis erectis confertis coronatis.”
Gray (1852) descriptions on Pterocyclos albersi – “Shell discoidal, rather solid, slightly striate, white, marbled with chestnut-coloured stripes, and with a broad blackish band below the periphery, with a horn-coloured periostraca; spire scarcely raised in the middle; suture deeply channelled; whorls 5, rather flattened, the last one disjoined anteriorly, with a scaly keel above; umbilicus very broad; aperture nearly circular, whitish inside; peristome double; internal edge straight, a little prominent and expanded, deeply indented above; external edge somewhat thickened, expanded, produced above into a beak, which is curved forward, quite disjoined and continued backwards into the channel of the suture. Operculum with a flat smooth apex; spiral lamella of the lower whorls coronated with crowded raised spines.”
Morgan (1885) original descriptions on Pterocyclos regelspergeri – “Pterocyclos testa depressa, perampliter patentissime umbilicata, fusca, maculis nigris rcgulariter ornata, apertura alba anfractibus quinque compusita, lineis parallclis striis tetatis ornata, anfractibus rotundatis, juxta suturas canaliculo depressis; apertura obliqua, circulari; labro subcaloso, parum reflexo; operculo circulari et corneo.”
Möllendorff (1886) descriptions on Spiraculum ? regelspergeri – “Very depressed, very widely umbilicated, 5 whorls, very finely striate; suture linear, under which there is a deep groove (“sillon”) covered by the margin which forming a canal along the suture is enlarged towards the aperture and ends in a lamina (“lame”) which covers the canal entirely and forms a tube of 4-5 mill. in length. Aperture oblique, nearly circular, slightly reflected, near the suture winged (“échancrée”). Colour horny above, brown at the base, a black band round the periphery, regularly arranged brown spots on the upper side which give the shell the aspect of a rolled-up snake. Operculum circular, horny, inner side presenting a spheical depression with a prominent nucleus in the centre, outer side helicoids (“hélicoïdale”) furnished with very fine membranaceous lamellae destined to render the fitting of the operculum more hermetic.”
Pterocyclos albersi – “Diam. 26, alt. 9 mill.” (Pfeiffer, 1847); Pterocyclos albersi – “Height 9, greatest breadth 26, least br. 22 mill.” (Gray, 1852); Pterocyclos regelspergeri – “Dimensions - Hauteur, 8 mm; largeur maxima, 25 mm; diamètre de l'ouverture, 8 mm.” (Morgan, 1885)
Type locality – “…” coll. C. Albers (Pfeiffer, 1847)
(Morgan, 1885)
