Lagochilus garelli (Eydoux & Souleyet, 1852)
(Martens, 1867)
“It is obvious that all the earlier and later writers had shells without epidermis before them, which cannot be called surprising as the periostracum is not very persistent and inclined to fall off easily. Now it happens that the shell from our first set displays the epidermal characters most beautifully. The skin is dark brown bearing stiff brown solitary hairs placed at the junctions of spiral and vertical ridges. Of spiral lines I can detect two on the spire and 10 on the last whorls those on the base of the shell near the umbilicus however becoming so faint as to be hardly discernable.” (Benthem-Jutting, 1934)
“Neither in the original diagnosis nor in the description by Von Martens (ostas. Landschn. 1867, p. 140), is, mention made of periostracal hairs ornamenting the spiral ridges. Our specimen from the Telom Valley is almost destitute of hairs, but for a few sparse cilia on the first, second and fifth lirae which are rapidly falling off at the slightest touch, and I venture to suppose that Souleyet had before him shells in this condition. For the rest his description agrees quite well with my specimen.” (Benthem-Jutting, 1949)
Martens (1867) descriptions on Cyclophorus garreli – “Testa turbinata, subangulata, modice umbilicata, oblique striatula et carinis tenuibus 9, quarum sexta peripherica, distantibus sculpta. corneofusca, concolor; spira exserta, conica; anfr. 5½, convexi, sutura sat profunda discreti, ultimus parum descendens; aperture diagonalis, circularis; peristoma tenue, distincte duplicatum, internum album, externum repandum, corneofuscum, utrumque continuum. Operculum tenue, planum, corneum, multispirum, margine acuto.”
Kobelt (1902) descriptions on Japonia (Lagocheilus) garreli – “Schale genabelt, niedrig kegelförmig, olivenbraun, mit schmalen, erhabenen Spirallinien; Apex spitz; 6 gewölbte Windungen; Mündung kreisrund, weisslich; Mundrand etwas umgeschlagen, innen verdickt, milchweiss; Nabel tief, innen verengt. Deckel dünn, durchscheinend, mit vielen Windungen.”
